  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the celery, carrot, onion, and garlic. Cook until the mixture is very soft, about 10 minutes.

  2. Add the tomatoes, chicken broth, black pepper, bay leaf, and butter. Bring the mixture to a boil, turn down the heat, and simmer until the vegetables are very tender, about 25 minutes.

  3. Add the fresh basil and parsley, and puree the mixture with an immersion blender, or blend it in a blender or food processor, until smooth. Serve.
